The US Ambbadador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington, has tasked the Nigerian government and people to ensure peaceful and credible general elections because "the world is interested and watching".
Polls: "The United States will not support any candidate"
Symington said this Friday in Lafia after meeting with Labaran Maku, Nasarawa's state leadership candidate for the All-Progressive Alliance Alliance (APGA).
Noting that the responsibility for ensuring peaceful, free, fair and credible elections rested with the Government and all citizens, he said that Nigeria had gained great credibility after the success of the 2015 general elections.
"This election was credible. he has raised the country's reputation on the international scene. Nigeria must continue this momentum because its citizens want peaceful and credible elections.
"All the candidates I have spoken to at all levels have expressed the desire for free, fair and credible elections, where all votes would count.
"The next elections are Nigeria and Nigerians. We must guarantee a free, fair, transparent and peaceful conduct, resulting in a credible result.
"In the end, every Nigerian is accountable to God, accountable to the law of the land, accountable to his conscience and to the court of public opinion, as well as to the eyes of the world.
"If Nigeria is to find a way forward for every Nigerian, this path goes through freedom, peace and credible elections to be decided by Nigerians," he said.
According to him, peace is not just something you engage in, but something that is planted and nurtured with growth using words and actions.
"It's really up to everyone to make a decision and take responsibility for doing what's right," said Symington.
Labaran Maku, in his remarks, said his party was determined to hold peaceful elections.
"I have always encouraged my supporters to promote peace in their behavior," he said. (NOPE)
