The Interior Minister said that the unrest in Bawaleshie on January 31 had nothing to do with the partial election of Ayawaso West Wuogon.

Ambrose Dery told the Emile Short Commission Thursday that gunmen who stormed the residence of the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)Delali Kwesi Brempong were there for a different company.

"It was not related to the electoral operation," he said.

To defend the integrity of the by-election, Ambrose Dery said that the violence did not occur in a polling station, but rather in a residence located near an office of vote.

"That's why I do not think it differs from the presentation I received," he added, adding that the briefing he had had was that the Police and immigration services would organize the elections.

But the minister said the police were investigating the violence.

Ambrose Dery was speaking on the first day of the commission's hearing at Osu Castle in Accra.

He also told the commission that the vehicle used by the gunmen during their operation does not belong to the police.

This vehicle however bore the SWAT mark of the police.

The commission has one month to complete its work, after which the presidency should follow up on its recommendations.

Hours after the by – election, gunmen stormed La Bawaleshie, a community in Ayawaso West Wuogon 's riding.

Eyewitnesses said the men were shooting, but the state security minister said the men had been sent there to find that weapons had been stored at a certain location. .

The NDC has since launched a series of attacks against the government, accusing it of being the mastermind of these attacks in order to intimidate supporters and sympathizers of the NDC.
