According to Bahrani, the hardest parts of adapting the book were deciding what details to remove and trying to accurately convey the tone of the novel.
“The hardest part was cutting things that I liked because I like everything in Aravind’s brilliant novel,” he explained. “It was very difficult. You try to capture a tone, it was a constant thought in my head – what’s the tone of the movie?
“Because the novel was very funny: it’s very fast, it’s quirky, it’s funny, it’s satirical but then in the middle of the film, in the heart of the book and in the film, something happens. thing and from there goes on to something a little darker and weirder.
“He still has some humor, but it’s darker and we constantly observed that while writing the script and directing the film.
Well, if Adiga’s comments himself have anything to say, Bahrani need not be concerned that he failed to capture that tone, as the author spoke in glowing terms of his satisfaction with the finished film, saying that it perfectly portrays the spirit and the world of his words.
“Spiritual, provocative and moving, the film he made not only brings my book to life, but transcends it,” he explained, adding that he hopes “everyone has a chance to see The White Tiger.
As for the changes in the narrative itself, there is a pretty major change in the structure: the film begins with a cold opening in which we see the central characters Balram, Ashok and Pinky involved in a car crash, an event that doesn’t actually do it. happen until the middle of the story.
Bahrani explained that the idea to open with this scene came to him while writing the second draft, and revealed that he also hid some information that is given from the beginning of the novel until later in the film.
“This [the cold open] happened in the second project, ”he explained. “The first draft was even closer to the novel, where the character announces his final action – which I don’t want to give as a spoiler – but the main thing he does, his difficult decision,” he announces in the novel at the beginning of the book.
“So with the second project that changed and I started with this cold opening, which is the middle of the movie, and doesn’t reveal what Balram does until he actually does.
The cast of White Tiger includes established stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Rajkummar Rao alongside newcomer Adarsh Gourav, who takes on the lead role of Balram.
