The appointment of Mr. Kwame Owusu as Chair of the Board of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) by President Nana Akufo-Addo is well below the waistline, said the MP for Yapei Kusawgu, Mr. John Jinapor.
The former deputy minister of power said that Owusu's appointment undermined confidence in the appointing authority and did not promote good governance.
Mr. Akufo-Addo recently renewed the mandate of the former director general of the Ghana Maritime Authority, who has been under intense pressure to resign in 2018, having used 1 million GHS public agency fund to turn his two-bedroom official residence into a grand five. room property with 13 air conditioners.
In a letter dated June 18, 2019, signed by Nana Asante Bediatuo, executive secretary of the president, said: "In accordance with article 4 (1) a) of Law No. 791 on the authority Ghana tax office, the President of the Republic, in consultation with the State Council, has appointed you Chairman of the Board of the Ghana Tax Authority. "
The correspondence asked Mr. Owusu to confirm his acceptance of the new appointment within 14 days.
Mr. Jinapor, who is not enthusiastic about this appointment, told Ekow Annan of Clbad91.3FM in an interview on Tuesday July 16, 2019 that Mr. Akufo-Addo had made a mistake in making this appointment.
"It's a man who admitted to spending that money. This is a man who admitted that he had planned five hundred people in his budget while he was two hundred. This is a man under investigation. When you place such a man in a position as clear as Ghana's tax authority, where you encourage us all to pay our taxes, what President Akufo-Addo did is below the belt. It speaks badly, it does not generate trust, it does not promote the fight against corruption, it does not promote the spirit of good governance. "
He added: "As a member of the Finance Committee, I believe this appointment is false."
