One in 100 deaths worldwide is the result of suicide, said Kwame George Osei, municipal mental health coordinator of Nkoranza Sud.
“Every 40 seconds someone commits suicide in the world,” he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview with Nkoranza in the Bono East region, as Ghana joined the rest of the world to mark World Suicide Prevention Day this year. (WSPD).
The WSDP, celebrated annually on September 10, is organized by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and represents a global commitment to bring attention to suicide prevention .
This year’s event is celebrated under the theme “Creating Hope Through Action” and reflects the need for collective action to address this urgent public health issue.
Mr Osei said he was concerned about the increase in attempted suicide cases in the municipality, as they have registered 11 cases this year.
“Parasuicides are likely to reoffend within 10 years,” he said, adding that suicide prevention was possible and called on the public to help people with mental illnesses access drugs.
“Every suicide is devastating and has a profound impact on those around them. However, by raising awareness, reducing stigma and encouraging knowledgeable action, we can reduce cases across the country,” Osei said.
