Accra, July 18, GNA – The Ministry of the Interior
City and Zongo Development seeks to introduce a "Zongo Soccer League" to
find talent in Zongo communities to promote unity and social cohesion.
This follows a national consultation
exercise undertaken by a team from the Zongo Development Fund.
Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the sector
Minister, informed it at a press evening in Accra to discuss
happenings at the ministry.
He said that Zongo community leaders
across the country were happy and endorsed the initiative, adding that this would help
help greatly because the country would be able to find the talents of young people.
Dr. Hamid noted that in a few months,
the Ministry would collaborate with the Ministry of Youth and Sports as well as
the Sports Authority to develop strategies for the football league
come to fruition.
He gave updates on current projects
Zongo communities such as recreation facilities and libraries that
would be set up to improve education.
The minister said the ministry was
faced with adversaries, many lives were touched during the year and a half
years of existence.
He said the ministry had come to stay and
would do its best to ensure that it is stabilized so that a change of
ministers or even the government would not affect its operations.
He noted that the Ministry would improve the
the infrastructure necessary to influence the life of the population, in accordance with
President's Program on the Seven-Year Economic and Social Development Program.
"The launching mandate was given to the
Zongo Development Fund for a wide range of projects in Zongo communities
and validation exercises have been completed in many of these companies.
In the next few weeks, the purchasing process
would start with the award of contracts, "he said.
The ministry would also initiate a pilot project
Adult Education Program in the Zongo Communities, from Greater Accra
Region, specifically Nima, Maamobi and New Town, as part of the Presidents' concerns
to improve education.
He added that seven learning centers had
so far and the recruitment of teachers has been carried out as well as a program
curriculum to help teaching.
The Zongo cooking program has so far given
approximately 500 women in these communities and with MASLOC's
would be given to women to keep their business running, he said.
The minister has declared eight months of arrears for
teachers, as part of the program for Arabic teachers, would be paid before the end
the week.
He said that building a college of
Education, specializing in Arabic, was under way, stating that very soon
some of the projects such as Astro Turfs, among others, would be
controlled.
He badured that the Ministry would engage in
a national tour with the press on different project sites to inspect
progress.
