Since 2007, the nonprofit organization TEAM has been able to support 18 schools and orphanages and more than three thousand schoolchildren in Benin, Côte d 'Ivoire, Cameroon and Senegal. A new crowdfunding campaign aims to raise 18,000 euros to finance school supplies and the construction of toilets, water towers and clbadrooms.
Majirus Fansi was born in a remote village of Cameroon. He grew up thinking that it was normal not to have schoolbooks, running water, and so on. But then he discovered how different life was in France and elsewhere, and now he wants to give something back.
Majirus has heard of the TEAM nonprofit organization (Touch of Hope for a Better Tomorrow) from a friend who has described exactly what he had experienced as a child.
"We did not even think about it. No running water, no toilets and 100 children in a clbadroom, it was normal. "
Majirus Fansi is now one of TEAM's volunteer project coordinators.
He and his volunteer colleague, Célia Fomani, are particularly enthusiastic about TEAM's efforts.
"We are leaving villages where other organizations are not going, we can reach people who are really in need," says Majirus.
Tears of joy
This is despite logistical difficulties, which may imply that local volunteers spend hours on winding roads, explains Célia.
Majirus describes how happy people are that the entire village benefits from a water tank installed in a school.
"When we come to the inauguration, we see people crying.
"Seeing the joy of people like this is a story of success," he says proudly.
"If I can give others so that they can have better conditions than I have myself, that would be great."
TEAM is proud of the fact that 87% of donations are directly spent on projects.
Some of their recent efforts have focused on places such as the Hanyigba Duga School in Togo, the Djigbé School in Ivory Coast and the Melan School in Cameroon.
No money is used for travel or other expenses of volunteers. They pay their own plane tickets to get to the villages on the day of the inauguration.
Crowdfunding campaigns and donations from companies such as Total Petroleum, which donated more than two thousand euros last year, are the main source of revenue.
They also organize football matches in France where teams pay a flat fee to participate.
Every year, they call schools to contact them and describe a project that TEAM can help.
Three schools selected, 53 others refused
It's hard to make the choice, but when they do, the results are worth it.
Their new crowdfunding campaign will be available on the Ulule platform on April 25th. This year, they hope to reap 18,000 euros.
