Ghana generates more than 3,000 tons of plastic waste every day
The US Embbady in Ghana warned that there would be more plastic than fish in the ocean by 2050.
According to an article on their official Facebook page, the embbady said that about 82% of Ghana's plastic waste could be recovered and recycled with existing technologies into value-added products worth GHC 2 billion a year, creating 5 million jobs in the economy.
The Embbady noted that less than 2% of the 3,000 tons of plastic waste generated in Ghana each day are recycled.
"More than 250,000 tonnes, or 23% of all plastic waste generated during a year in Ghana, should be dumped into the Atlantic Ocean. By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean by weight, "reads the message.
Ghana faces a plastic threat, almost everything, including food and non-food products, being packed in plastic without any elaborate plan in place to deal with the waste generated after the use of the products.
Various media reports indicate that 10% of the environmental tax is levied on producers of plastic products, bringing in nearly a billion GH ¢, without any dime being released to manage the plastic waste.
Stakeholders dealing with plastics are of the opinion that recycling was the best way to effectively treat exhausted polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.
