Theresa May under fire as MPs try to block Brexit without compromise: live updates

Any further delay to Brexit will inevitably be long and the UK will have to prepare for European elections, if necessary, says Theresa May's Chancellor. Philip Hammond Robert Peston told ITV News.

But Hammond suggested that an extension – that Britain will have to ask if Cooper's bill succeeds and that May can not get her contract out by April 12 – could be shortened when the Grande Britain will be ready to leave.

He said that it was important "we have absolute clarity that as soon as we have reached agreement, we will be able to put an end to this extension", adding that "it is less time nominal "of the extension and more easily Britain can stop it and get out of the EU.

Any extension to Brexit, as well as its terms, must be approved by the EU.

Hammond also repeated his suggestion that a second confirmation referendum is "credible".

"It is common knowledge that this is one of the issues debated," he said. "It's a perfectly credible proposition, some ideas have been put forward that are not deliverable, they are not negotiable," but a second vote "deserves" to be voted on, he added.
