Despite our best efforts, we can never fully predict Emmy nominations. The HBO Legacy series that ends, as Game of thrones and Veep, are a given, and some of the first entries, like Pit / Verdon and The Kominsky method, was expected. But there have been big surprises this year. Check them here.
The little comedy that could, Schitt's Creek
Chances are, you know someone who looks Schitt's Creek. They probably told you about the hilarious subversive comedy about a rich family, the Roses, who loses everything and has to start all over again in a small town full of characters. But unless you pay for Pop TV, you did not meet this series until Netflix picked it up in 2017 – or more likely even later.
But once you watch the show that stars Eugene Levy and his real son, Dan, as two members of the central family (they also created it), you're hooked. Now, having broadcast its sixth and final season, Schitt's Creek was finally recognized. In addition to the best comic series, Levy and his wife, Catherine O'Hara, are named respectively in the main actor and actress category in a comedy category.
The Amazon series criticized (but ignored by the public) Fleabag
Fleabag is yet another Amazon series that has little or no promotion from his studio. But critics have spread the word, inviting fans to try their luck in this particularly entertaining series of Kill Eve writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge. And those who did it were hooked, disappointed to find that after his second season aired in 2019, there was more Fleabag In progress.
Waller-Bridge, who also plays in the series, was named lead actress in the series and for her writing. Fleabag Sian Clifford, the newcomer, who plays one of the few characters named in the series, Claire, is named for her supporting role, alongside Olivia Colman, winner of several Oscars (her appointment is much less surprising).
The strange shot, dark and funny, Russian doll
Nobody really knew what they were getting into when they started Russian doll, a mystery comedy from Netflix that the first season dropped in February. It was, it was not by chance, just in time for Groundhog Day – you know, like the movie, which is alluded to in the plot of the series. Only this decision is a little darker.
Russian doll This has been a huge success for Netflix, but it's a little out of place with the usual Emmy rate. Co-creator and star Natasha Lyonne certainly contributed to her credibility, and she was nominated for the lead role in a comedy series. The series is also on the list of Outstanding Comedy Series nominees, and two episodes are nominated for their writing (including the pilot, co-written by Lyonne and his fellow creators, Leslye Headland and Amy Poehler).
Joey King's career comeback L & # 39; act
You may know the young actress Joey King from her appearances in a variety of movies, big budget movies like Los Angeles War and The black knight gets up on Netflix rom-com The Kissing Booth and his next sequel. His work on TV was also well received, but nothing compared to his role as Gypsy Blanchard in the series Hulu True Crime L & # 39; act.
At barely 19, King was naturally happy and surprised to receive a nomination as a lead actress in a limited series or a TV movie – she faces Oscar nominees Patricia Arquette, Amy Adams and Michelle Williams. Arquette has also portrayed her mother in the series but is nominated for her performance in Escape from Dannemora.
Mandy Moore is finally recognized for This is us
This one is less of a surprise because it happened at all, but because it just happened. Mandy Moore played in NBC's acclaimed drama This is us since 2016 – the third season of the series aired in the spring.
But Moore, unlike some of his co-stars, has just received his first appointment. By way of comparison, Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia (who respectively represent her son and husband) were nominated for the lead role in Season 1 and Season 2 (with Brown's victory in 2017). The two are again named alongside Moore and, for the third year in a row, This is us is in place for the outstanding drama series.
The experimental film of Netflix Black Mirror: Bandersnatch
The TV movie category is strange. In the past, it has been merged with miniseries, although that has changed in recent years with the rise of miniseries. A new rule further clarifies this, stating that an entry must have at least 75 minutes of running to be eligible.
This year, HBO dominates the category. In addition to standard rates, Netflix interactive software Black mirror episode Bandersnatch, which has been clbadified as a movie. In addition to having a running time that depends on the user's choice, this is a really great choice for the Academy of Television. It seems safe to say that it will probably not win.
