A fellow driver, believed to be in his late 30s, was strangled to death by suspected armed robbers in Oborpah, Upper Manya Krobo Municipality, Eastern Region.
The gang of three thieves tied the hands and legs of the deceased during the operation at a gas station.
The deceased who allegedly slept under a truck parked at the Safety Fuel gas station was mistaken for a security guard on duty, according to an anonymous police source.
The gunmen stormed two separate gas stations during their operation and took away a cash amount of 21,000 GHC.
They first attacked the Safety Fuel gas station and fled with 16,040 GHC after threatening the attendants on duty.
The group then stormed the Pacific petrol station, located about 150 meters from the first and a few meters from a police checkpoint on the Odumase Krobo-Asesewa highway.
At Pacific station, they took 4,886.00 GHC after threatening to shoot Samuel Mensah, a 23-year-old supervisor.
However, they fled the scene before the police arrived.
Area Dademantse Moses Tetteh, who confirmed the incident to JoyNews, said the development had scared residents.
“We are worried because there are thefts from time to time in this area. The police are close but it is a surprise that they do not fear them, ”he said.
The latest gas station robbery comes barely a week after three armed robbers stormed another gas station in Asenema, a suburb of Adukrom and seized 1,200 GHC.
The robbers overpowered a security guard on duty before completing their operation.
Occupants of a utility vehicle purchasing fuel at the station were also stripped of their belongings.
The gang fled to a nearby bush before Adukrom police arrived at the scene.
The area has been known for thefts in recent times.
As a result, the Ghana Police Service has deployed its anti-theft team to the region to combat these incidents.
However, the anti-theft squad was attacked a few days ago by another gang of robbers on the Akyem-Ettokrom-Bunso section.
The thieves were about to attack a commercial vehicle when police struck them.
Seeing the police team, the gang opened fire through the windshield.
Police also began to retaliate before the thieves escaped into the night.
Five worn AK 47 shells and more were recovered, after which police conducted a search of the surrounding area.
