Measles is highly contagious and spreads easily in the air
Vancouver Coastal Health sent a letter to parents after the discovery of a new case of measles in two schools.
Health officials are studying possible cases of measles at French high schools Jules-Verne and Anne-Hebert in Vancouver.
Two unrelated cases were reported in the region earlier this week. One of them was caught locally, while the first case came from abroad.
More details should be released Friday afternoon.
A measles outbreak in the states of Washington and Oregon this winter has already sickened 56 people, forcing lawmakers in Washington to review the non-medical exemptions allowing kids to go to school. without a vaccine if their parents express a personal objection. This, in turn, provoked public protests against the need to vaccinate their children.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads easily in the air when an infected person breathes, coughs or sneezes. The virus can survive in small droplets in the air for several hours.
Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and red, inflamed eyes, usually appearing seven to 14 days after the initial exposure. These are followed three to seven days later by a rash that lasts for at least three days.
