Third premature baby dies as a result of an infection at Glasgow Hospital

A third premature baby died at the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital in Glasgow after the discovery of an infection in a neonatal unit.

An Incident Management Team (IMT) was created earlier this year to investigate three cases of Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection following the deaths of two premature babies.

IMT includes specialized clinicians, infection control physicians and nurses, occupational health clinicians, and field and facility colleagues.

The third baby was not identified, although the board of health confirmed that Staphylococcus aureus infection was a contributing factor in the death.

The NHS Greater Glasgow and the Clyde Health Council said: "As stated previously, we have rigorously treated a number of cases of rare infection of blood flow to Staphylococcus aureus in extremely premature infants in the US. Neonatal unit of the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital.

"Three babies, extremely poor because of their very early birth, unfortunately died and the infection was one of many causes that contributed to their deaths.

"Since early March, no other patient has been tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus infection.

"A staff and family selection program has been put in place, as previously stated. This is one of the many measures taken to respond to this strain of Staphylococcus aureus.

"As this was an extremely rare strain that is highly resistant to the two antibiotics normally prescribed for S. Aureus and the skin cleansing agent commonly used in UK hospitals, we have implemented a number of additional infection control measures, including prescription. different antibiotics and the introduction of a new skin cleansing agent.
