(Reuters) – Inter Milan took third place in Serie A over its rival, AC Milan, after an exhilarating victory in the 3-2 derby at San Siro, putting an end to to a series of five victories for hosts Gennaro Gattuso.

Matias Vecino's goal gave the Nerazzurri a deserved lead before Stefan De Vrij and Lautaro Martinez hit with a penalty kick after the break, while Milan's Tiemoue Bakayoko and Mateo Musacchio kept Rossoneri in the game.

Inter, eliminated from the Europa League in the last 16 games by Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday, has extended his invincible Milan derby to six matches, his best since 1999, and has moved up to third place with 53 points, two more than Milan in fourth.

Inter came out three minutes later when Martinez rose to the last post to direct Ivan Perisic's center into the penalty area, where Vecino was about to hit home.

The two players doubled their lead to 51st with De Vrij's superb header beyond goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, but Milan took six minutes to return to allow Bakayoko to score his first goal with Inter since his loan on loan from Chelsea.

Milan substitute Sami Castillejo then dropped winger Matteo Politano and Martinez converted the penalty to 67th.

But Inter was caught four minutes later when Musacchio scored a rebound after goalkeeper Samir Handanovic parried a deflection from opposing goalkeeper Danilo D'Ambrosio.

In the final minutes, Andrea Conti, Milan's substitute, received a red card for a tackle against Martinez, but the referee decided to place his order to a reservation after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review.

Furious Inter coach Luciano Spalletti was sent off to protest, but his team was kept alive by D'Ambrosio's late-goal-goal lockout thanks to a goal from Patrick Cutrone.

(The story corrects to clarify that Martinez scored a penalty in the second paragraph)
