Researchers studying pancreatic cancer have made a major breakthrough that they believe could save lives.

A team in London has discovered that cancer can begin and develop in two different ways.

The discovery was made thanks to the new 3D imaging technology.

In the past, scientists badyzed 2D sections of the pancreas with abnormal growths without being able to explain the abnormalities.

By studying 3D organ tissue, the team found that there were two types of cancerous formations: one form that develops inward and another that develops towards l & # 39; outside.

This helped the researchers to "solve the decades-old mystery of tumor formation," they say in their report.

They believe that this new information could help in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease in the future.

The research was conducted by Dr. Axel Behrens and Guillaume Salbreux of the Francis Crick Institute in London.

"Now that we know that pancreatic cancer can develop in two different ways, we can begin to determine whether it is likely to be more aggressive or to spread in a different way," said Dr. Behrens.

"In many years, this could improve the options for diagnosis or treatment."

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most lethal forms of the disease.

Less than seven percent of people with pancreatic cancer survive five years after diagnosis.
