It could have been the quickest mystery This is us never solved.
This week, Kevin, Kate and Randall visited their uncle Nicky (Griffin Dunne), still mysteriously alive. We had the full story of what happened when this boat exploded in Vietnam and what happened in the following years.
Nicky had taught this village boy to fish by throwing grenades into the water (a good idea if we heard one), and after a few successful tries, the kid tried to eliminate Nicky's grenade. He fell to the ground on the boat and the boy did not understand or was interested in Nicky's desperate attempts to make him jump in the water. Nicky jumped, but the little boy did not succeed. Nicky was evacuated immediately and her relationship with Jack has never been the same.
Nicky retired to a caravan in the woods of Pennsylvania, eventually sending postcards to Jack that he had signed under the name of Clark Kent. Jack stalked him, mainly to tell his brother to leave him alone, because he had a whole new life with his wife and children.
When the Big 3 found him years later, he was quietly devastated to learn that Jack had died before their reconciliation. After telling them his story, Nicky dismissed them and, after Kevin remembered that his father had told him that he could be a better man, he returned the car and went back to Nicky's caravan, where he found him ready to commit suicide.
"I never had to tell him … that it was an accident," Nicky said.
What we saw of Jack tonight was a whole new facet of him, the group that had shamefully abandoned his brother after an accident and then did his best to bury him. He never talked about Nicky to Rebecca, and Rebecca was clearly not happy that her husband kept such a secret.
Last week, executive producer Isaac Aptaker explained that a lot of things about Jack would become clear after tonight's episode.
"That explains a lot about Jack," he said. "I think that after next week, it adds an entire layer to the character, and suddenly parts of it still shrouded in mystery or in which you suspect a darkness or an unknown story, but did not really know what All of a sudden, it will make a lot more sense, so I think it really brings out the character in a very interesting way. "Suddenly, this amazing dad Jack and this little boy Jack and War Jack, all of them unite in one person after learning this piece of the puzzle. "
Although we know what happened during the war and why Jack eliminated Nicky from his life, that does not mean that there are no more issues to be solved. Did Nicky really get help after he left Vietnam? What has he been doing alone for over 40 years? And how will he integrate into the life of the Pearsons in the future? Let's hope we do not have to watch this guy die as we did when Randall found his biological father, long lost. Not sure that our hearts can bear it!
