We had been led to believe that Nicky, Jack's troubled brother, had died during the Vietnam War – but it actually turns out that he is alive.

It was not revealed how he had survived the blast, but the final scene showed us that he was apparently living under his real name in Pennsylvania, just three hours away from Pittsburgh.

Weekly entertainment has contacted Nicky's actor, Michael Angarano, to tell him of his reaction to this situation, and the possible follow-up plot from the moment the series will come back.

"I had a hard time understanding," he says. "They do such a good job guiding you in a way, and as an actor, you jump to all these badumptions, then they manage to surprise you by the direction they will take.

"It's shocking – it's really shocking – and I do not think anyone would have even guessed it."

Explaining that he thinks Nicky would have preferred to die rather than survive the explosion of the time, he has now decided to "try to live life to the best of his abilities".

Angarano also teased that we would find out if Jack knew the truth about Nicky "very soon". So, the first episode of the second half of the season?
