Electronic music can sometimes seem a little too virgin and digital, and some of the best electronic musicians are distinguished by the way they dirty their productions to give them an organic advantage. To help in this quest, Latvia's Erica Synths launches a new eurorack synthesizer module called Plasma Drive – whose job is to add distortion to your music via the new approach of turn it into a flash.
Imagined by the crazy scientists of another Latvian company, Gamechanger Audio, this approach involves increasing your audio signal up to 3,000 V and turning it into a series of high voltage discharges into a tube filled with xenon . This gives a breathtaking sight of literal flashes in a bottle and, after applying user adjustable modulation to the sound, it converts the discharges into an acoustic signal. Erica says the result is "a fast, sensitive and extremely heavy distortion with tons of unique character".
The Gamechanger Audio gang has already met with success with its Plasma pedal, presented at NAMM last year, and Plasma Drive is an adaptation of the same technology, but with a different creative audience. The new module debuts at NAMM 2019, which takes place this week (and The edge will cover live), before the release date of February 20 at a price of 310 € (about 350 $) excluding taxes.
