In Captain Marvel # 25, Carol Danvers gets a major power upgrade as well as an electric new look thanks to a powerful superhero from the future.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Captain Marvel # 25 by Kelly Thompson, Lee Garbett, Belén Ortega, Antonio Fabela, and Clayton Cowles of VC, on sale now.
Less than a week ago, Marvel announced that Carol Danvers would be receiving a new mystical power-up and costume in the Captain Marvel series. However, beyond the debut of the character’s new costume, no other details were revealed as it would relate directly to the conclusion of the title’s current story arc, “The New World,” which trapped Carol in the future.
The latest issue of Captain Marvel begins to explain what sets off this bold new direction for the cosmic superhero. In the issue, Carol gets new powers and a new costume – but that’s not the costume that Marvel revealed. It’s a whole different thing, triggered by Thor’s future daughter, Brigid.

In “The New World”, Carol Danvers was mysteriously transported to 2052. There she found Earth in a dystopian state. Most of the world was destroyed and frozen, and only a few groups of survivors remained. One of those groups is made up of young new heroes, the sons and daughters of several Avengers led by Emma Frost and Spider-Woman. The other group of survivors are located in New Atlantis, and they follow Ove, the son of Namor the submarine and the Asgardian villain, the Enchantress.
While Ove seemed friendly at first, he quickly revealed himself as a villain and, in Captain Marvel # 24, he unleashed his demonic forces on Carol Danvers and her superhero friends. When the problem ended, they were all his prisoners, and Ove had planned to cast a spell on Captain Marvel for the next part of his plan.
Now in Captain Marvel # 25, Ove reveals he intends to use Carol’s life force to time travel, a new era he plans to invade. Fortunately, there is a young superhero who interrupts his plans: Brigid, Thor’s daughter. The character was introduced in Captain Marvel # 23, and it was clear the Asgardian took after her father: she’s a powerful warrior with a penchant for hammers. However, she had yet to prove that she was worthy of using the God of Thunder’s iconic weapon, Mjolnir.
Even though she is flanked only by Emma Frost, Brigid rushes into battle against Ove and her forces, all in an effort to save Captain Marvel from a grim fate. This heroic act is commendable and inspiring, and it does the trick: with it, Brigid proves herself worthy, and Mjolnir flies into her hand. As a result, she obtains new Asgardian armor and the full powers of the God of Thunder.
Her first act is then to use the hammer to summon her full might into Captain Marvel, giving her a magical boost that gives her a power upgrade and a whole new look. Now, the Captain Marvel costume is black with bright orange accents that sizzle with a power that can barely be contained. It shows that she’s bursting with power and is about to test her newfound abilities on Ove.
Brigid uses Thor’s powers to give Captain Marvel a massive power boost. Given that Carol is now also fueled by Asgardian magic, this may explain why the Cosmic Avenger will have magical abilities to hone in the next storyline in the series. And with the energy flowing through her current costume, she would likely need a new outfit to handle all of her extra power.
