SALTON CITY, Calif. (AP) – According to authorities, thousands of migratory birds have died this month in the Salton Sea, California, as a result of bird cholera.
The California Department of Fish and Game indicates that ducks, gulls and other birds were found dead at the south end of the largest lake in the state, from January 8 to last Thursday. .
The tests showed signs of bird cholera, an infectious bacterial disease. It is spread through direct contact, contaminated food or water.
Wildlife officials report that outbreaks occur each year as a result of grouping birds during the migration.
This 350 km2 (560 km2) lake is located in the desert near the Mexican border. This is a regular stop for migratory birds.
