JOHANNESBURG – The Illumination Christian Gathering (ECG) church, led by the self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri, said the faithful had gathered for Sunday service, despite the recent arrest of their leader.

Church operations resumed after their suspension of one month following the deaths of three people during a rush last December.

Bushiri and his wife were arrested Friday by the Hawks for fraud, money laundering and contravention of the 2015 Organized Crime Prevention Law.

The couple is scheduled to appear in Pretoria's commercial court on Monday.

ECG spokesman Maynard Manyowa said that Sunday's religious service was uninterrupted.

"The attendance rate at the church was just as expected with maximum capacity [being] between 25,000. People are happy, they are happy and adore. "
