Thousands of people are expected to benefit from a new device capable of “removing” the pain caused by cluster headaches.
Imagine that, just a little device that can keep you from feeling the pain of headaches? Where can you find one?
Well, if you really need a gammaCore device – as it’s called – you might be able to get one on the NHS.
It works by delivering a low level electric current to the neck area to block pain signals caused by cluster headaches.
Cluster headaches are relatively rare and most commonly seen in men between the ages of 30 and 40.
However, they are really painful and this device promises to banish that pain for many people.
They are often described as a strong burning or piercing sensation on one side of the head and can last between 15 minutes and three hours.
People who suffer the most can have up to eight per day.
This is why these people will greatly benefit from gammaCore, which can prevent them when they get noticed, as well as provide pain relief once it starts.
About one or two in 1,000 people are affected by cluster headaches, and about one in 20 people experience little or no benefit from traditional treatments such as pain relievers or oxygen, according to NHS England.
After two years of clinical trials, it is hoped that around 11,000 people will be able to benefit from this new device.
NHS Medical Director Stephen Powis said: ‘Although small, these devices will make a huge difference to people with these debilitating headaches – relieving painful symptoms and allowing people to go about their lives daily normally.
“This is the latest example of the NHS testing the latest technology and rapidly deploying it to patients across the country.”
Matthew Whitty, Director of Innovation and Life Sciences for NHS England, added: “The gammaCore device will bring benefits that will change the lives of thousands of people and this is just one of many technologies mandated by the NHS. “
Innovation Minister Lord Bethell said: “It is extremely encouraging to see innovative technology transforming the way we treat disease in the NHS.
“This new gammaCore device will provide relief to many people with cluster headaches and is one of many innovative treatments available to NHS patients.”
