Ghanaian journalist and Network of International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) member Emmanuel Dogbevi has revealed that three anonymous senior Ghanaian politicians were captured in the Pandora Papers leak published on Sunday, October 3.
Speaking on News 360 on TV3 on Monday, October 4, he said the report does not give details of who the politicians are but only mentions that three Ghanaian politicians are captured.
The ICIJ website lists Ghana as “number three” without giving more details about these officials.
“Criminals, murderers, people involved in serious crimes are also mentioned because they also move money around the world,” Dogbevi added.
He further underlined the negative effect of the flight of illicit capital, a situation which makes this report a situation which should be given due attention.
Honorary Vice President of Imani Africa and Managing Director of mPedegree, Bright Simons also spoke on this topic on Monday.
In a tweet on Monday, October 4, he said: “The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists claims that the Pandora Papers constitute the largest leak of confidential material to the press ever. 3 Ghanaian politicians, 10 from Nigeria and 2 from Kenya are involved. A total of 49 African politicians are mentioned.
The Guardian had explained that the Pandora papers are the biggest offshore data breach ever to expose the financial secrets of the rich and powerful around the world.
The secret deals and hidden assets of some of the richest and most powerful people in the world have been revealed in history’s largest leaked offshore data hoard.
Dubbed Pandora Papers, the cache includes 11.9 million records of companies hired by wealthy clients to create offshore structures and trusts in tax havens such as Panama, Dubai, Monaco, Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.
They expose the secret offshore affairs of 35 world leaders, including current and former presidents, prime ministers and heads of state. They also shed light on the secret finances of more than 300 other public officials such as ministers, judges, mayors and military generals in more than 90 countries.
The files include disclosures about the Conservative Party’s major donors, raising difficult questions for Boris Johnson as his party meets for its annual conference.
More than 100 billionaires are included in the leaked data, along with celebrities, rock stars and business leaders. Many use shell companies to hold luxury items such as properties and yachts, as well as incognito bank accounts. There’s even art ranging from looted Cambodian antiques to paintings by Picasso and murals by Banksy.
Pandora’s articles reveal the inner workings of what is a phantom financial world, providing a rare window into the hidden operations of a global offshore economy that allows some of the world’s richest people to hide their wealth, and in some case, to pay little or no tax.
The BBC also cited excerpts from the report indicating that the family of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta had secretly owned a network of offshore companies for decades.
The Pandora Papers – 12 million files – are the biggest such leak in history.
Mr. Kenyatta and six members of his family are linked to 13 offshore companies.
He said he would “respond comprehensively” to the leak once he returns from a state visit abroad.
However, he added that the investigation “would go a long way to improving the financial transparency and openness we need in Kenya and around the world.”
The Kenyatta’s offshore investments, including a company with stocks and bonds worth $ 30million (£ 22million), have been discovered among hundreds of thousands of pages of administrative documents from the archives of 14 law firms and service providers in Panama and the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and other tax havens, the BBC further reported.
