Three More Cases of Chronic Debilitating Disease Discovered in Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks announced the confirmation of three more cases of chronic wasting.

The executive director of the agency's Wildlife Bureau, Russ Walsh, told The Hattiesburg American that cases had been confirmed this week in Benton and Marshall counties. The deadly neurological disease affects deer, elk and moose.

So far, 19 cases have been confirmed in the counties of Benton, Issaquena, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc and Tallahatchie. Walsh says that recent cases in Panola and Tallahatchie counties were outside the current area of ​​disease management in the north.

The zones prohibit supplementary feeding and carcbad transport outside the boundaries of the zone to limit the spread of the disease. Walsh says the agency is now studying how to update the North Zone.
