Captain America’s kickboxing foe Batroc has just gained a significant advantage against Knull’s symbiote army.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for King in Black: Thunderbolts # 1 by Matthew Rosenberg, Juan Ferreyra, and Joe Sabino of VC, on sale now.
When an ancient world-devouring space god comes calling, many of Marvel’s greatest heroes respond. With Knull’s arrival on Earth, the Kingpin forms his own team with the goal of doing something about the god Symbiote. It’s probably doomed to fail, but at least it will be entertaining. Speaking of which, a member of the new Thunderbolts team, Batroc, got some new electric boots thanks to the death (murder) of his teammate, Ampere. This could ensure that the most ridiculous member of the Thunderbolts survives until the end of this new series.

After Knull’s coating the Earth in a goo symbiote, the Kingpin has gathered several criminals in an attempt to save the city and most likely the world. Among them were Batroc, Taskmaster, Star, Mister Fear, Rhino, Snakehead and Ampere. After being convinced to join in on Kingpin’s classic combination of corruption and death threats, the new Thunderbolts were trained to take on Knull. And they didn’t even last ten minutes before things started to go wrong.
Snakehead was killed by a dragon, sparking a fight to overpower the beast that allowed Star to demonstrate his full might, but faint in the process. Not the most inspiring start. And Rhino seemed to echo that sentiment as he quickly walked away from the team, preferring to try his luck with Knull’s minions instead of Knull himself. Ampère would have joined him, if Mister Fear hadn’t killed him for trying to betray the team.
But, while it may have been … an overreaction, it definitely benefited the rest of the (remaining) squad. Mister Fear, in a rare moment of lucidity, realized that with Ampere dead, his electrical gadgets are of no use to a corpse. So, with an even rarer display of generosity, Mister Fear flaunted the electric coils Ampere wore to his teammates. But while Taskmaster and Mister Fear took only one, Batroc took two, placing them on his boots and giving him a unique advantage against the Symbiotes.
Batroc the Leaper is a master of the French form of kick-boxing, savate. His whole thing is kicking people. It’s dangerous enough for someone of his skill level, but pairing that with a weapon that adds more damage to kicks and he becomes a much less absurd villain. And more importantly, it also gives him an edge against the Symbiote Army he was hired for.
Knull’s army may be unlike anything the Marvel Universe has known before, but it’s still made up of symbiotes. Whether they’re humanoid type, those who own the bodies of dead colleagues (poor Ampere couldn’t take a break even in death) or just a dragon symbiote – they all share the same weaknesses. Electricity is one of the most documented. So for Batroc, having his greatest weapons amplified, makes him a much more credible threat to Knull’s forces.
And considering how quickly the Thunderbolts collapsed in the opening pages of their new comic, it goes without saying that in this series, no one is safe. Batroc once had a near-death experience trying to hold back the hordes so his teammates could escape. And if it hadn’t been for his talents as a scholar, he could very well have died. But the team seems to be pulling themselves together as they adjust to the threats they face. And now they have a new weapon to fight them.
