Timo Werner’s first season at Chelsea was a bit of a top-down affair.
Arriving in London amidst a sea of fan-fair and excitement, the German leader failed to make any kind of significant mark in England.
As is the case nowadays, he quickly became a bit of a meme, better known for his propensity to fend off golden scoring opportunities than for his ability to finish them.
The more time passed and the more Werner continued to struggle, the louder and louder the rival fans became in their aggression against the German.
There were certainly encouraging signs, of course. Its first season was by no means a complete failure, but the margins between going viral on Twitter for good reasons or comedic are pretty good.
Chelsea won the Champions League after all, Werner contributed some invaluable strikes along the way.
They also got another top four in the premier league with Werner once again stepping in throughout the campaign.
While that leaves room for optimism, it just has to be said, it was not bought to ‘participate’. He was bought to run ragged defenses and score over 20 goals per season.
His Euro 2020 campaign will also not have done much to cure his failing confidence.
Germany were sent off by England in the round of 16, with Werner largely anonymous throughout the campaign.
The only thing for that was for Werner to take some time to refocus and recharge his batteries as he looks to the season ahead.

However, even far from the citadels of European football, Werner still finds a way to make himself the target of memes.
Present at the Austrian Grand Prix this weekend, Werner agreed to be interviewed by Sky Sports on the grid in the moments before the lights went out.
Unfortunately, during his presentation, Werner was portrayed as the “Chelsea and Germany goalkeeper”.
Naturally, the internet swung into action, leaping at the chance to put more misery on the hapless attacker.
While the reporter’s mistake was just that, a mistake, rival fans couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that a man who not so long ago was seen as one of the most exciting attack options in the world, now is to be mistaken for a corkscrew.
Still, passing judgment on Werner after an indifferent season isn’t fair, and there’s every chance he can turn things around at Stamford Bridge to become a Premier League success.
