Winston Duke will play Marcus Garvey in an upcoming film.
The Tobago-born actor, who gained worldwide fame playing M’baku in The Black Panther, will play the Pan-Africanist in the Amazon film. Marked man.
The film will be directed by Andrew Dosunmu.
According to Deadline, the film is partly inspired by the biography of Colin Grant Negro with a Hat: The Rise and Fall of Marcus Garvey.
Set in the 1920s, Marked man follows a young black man who joins J. Edgar Hoover’s Federal Bureau of Investigation, then infiltrates Garvey’s UNIA organization, testing his loyalty to race and country as he grows weary of the two men’s actions .
The screenplay is by acclaimed playwright Kwame Kwei-Armah.
Marcus Moziah Garvey was born August 17, 1887 in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica.
He was the leader of the Pan-Africanist movement, which sought to unify and connect people of African descent around the world.
He was the founder of the Negro World newspaper, the Black Star Line shipping company, and the Universal Negro Improvement Association, or UNIA, a fraternal organization of black nationalists.
Garvey died at the age of 52 in London in 1940 of complications from two strokes.
Commenting on the role, Duke said on Instagram that he was honored as a Caribbean man to portray Garvey.
He wrote, “Man, where to start. As an immigrant, activist and citizen of the Caribbean world, one of the most significant stories of my development have been the words and works of Marcus Garvey. Today, I have the chance to announce that I have the opportunity to bring his story to life, with a team of passionate collaborators. I have not lost sight of how important and meaningful this is, not only to the generations who already know about his contributions to the black liberation landscape, but for those who have not yet known and embraced him and what that he represented. I can’t wait to get into this one and take you on this amazing journey.
