Let an adorable cat become the biggest advocate of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) on the Internet at the moment. Meet Toby, the Heroes EDS you did not know that you needed you.
Toby is a 6 year old cat who has been diagnosed with EDS, known as feline skin asthenia (ACF) in the world of cats. As in humans, EDS is a genetic disorder that affects the amount and structure of collagen in your body.
Collagen is important in many parts of your body, including your joints, ligaments and tendons, your connective tissue between your organs and your skin. In Toby's case, her skin is the most affected. He falls and hangs from his body because he does not have elasticity. Skin problems, such as fragile, loose, stretchy or velvety skin, are common when you have an EDS.
Toby and his best friend Quinten, another special needs cat who lost all his teeth, were at the RSPCA in England, waiting for their return home. according to MeowGeorgina Price and her partner, Christopher Lardner, saw the pair of cats and immediately knew they could provide the perfect home.
"We had never heard of EDS before we found him, we just knew he needed a loving home and we have so much love to give," said Price to Meow. Toby and Quinten are now with Price and Lardner for seven months and have settled well.
As Toby's skin is affected by EDS, just as in other people, Price shares that it hurts easily even during regular activities like grooming or playing with Quinten. In addition, Price said that they feared the impact of Toby's extra weight of skin on his health over the years. As a preventative measure, Toby's family tries to limit the number of jumps made to reduce stress on their joints.
Today, Toby lives his best life in his most beautiful home. "He loves to rub his belly and will drop next to you and watch you waiting for you to rub his belly," said Price. Toby also advocates for awareness of DHS, whatever the species.
