A joint team of military and police deployed to Chereponi in the Northeast region arrested a Togolese national in connection with clashes between Konkombas and Chokosis in Chereponi.

The suspect, Matthew Kolani Gando, was recruited in Togo to take part in the conflict in Chereponi.

The public relations officer of the police, the DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, who confirmed the arrest to DGN Online, said the suspect had confessed to being recruited for the operation.

According to him, the suspect allegedly mentioned six other suspects with whom he came to the area with four motorbikes from Togo.

DSP Tanko said the suspect was currently in custody and that he would be brought to court after investigation.

He said the police had started to search for the other six accomplices and anyone else financing criminal activities in the Chereponi area.

Up to now, eight people have been arrested in connection with the clashes in Chereponi.

Akwasi Amidu, Issah Bujume, Inusah Agboagme, Yakubu Musah and a Rafiq were also remanded in custody by a Tamale court.

Two of the suspects were released on bail because of their age and state of health.

Three people died as a result of the resumption of violence.
