Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau were both excluded from the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for the coronavirus.
World number 1 Rahm has tested positive for the second time in two months. On June 5, Rahm – who took a six-stroke lead at the USPGA Memorial Tournament in Ohio – was forced to retire after learning he had tested positive as he came off the 18th green . The 26-year-old won the US Open.
The positive result was detected in a third PCR test after the Spaniard took part in the Sandwich Open last week.
Spain will not call a replacement and will only be represented on the men’s side by Adri Arnaus.
DeChambeau was kicked out after testing positive for Covid-19 before traveling to Japan.
Last year’s US Open champion, sixth overall, was due to make his Olympic debut in Tokyo when competition kicks off Thursday.
Instead, USA Golf announced that DeChambeau has been replaced by Patrick Reed, who joins Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Xander Sc Chaudele in the United States squad as he heads into his second Games.
DeChambeau shot a final round of 65 at the Open last week to reclaim a share of 33rd place after a tumultuous week, after hitting his equipment suppliers after going 71 on Open Day.
The way he finished the tournament had given the 27-year-old confidence that he could compete for gold in Tokyo, but instead had to watch from home.
“I am deeply disappointed that I will not be able to compete in the Olympics for the American team,” said DeChambeau.
“Representing my country means the world to me and it has been a huge honor to be a part of this team. I wish Team USA the best of luck next week in Tokyo.
Patrick Reed has been called up by Team USA to replace DeChambeau
“I will now focus on my health and look forward to returning to competition once I am cleared to do so.”
Reed, who finished tied for 11th at the Rio Olympics five years ago, said: “I am very happy to have the opportunity to represent our country and be part of Team USA in Tokyo.
“I only wish Bryson the best, and I know how disappointed he is that he can’t compete, and I’ll do my best to play my best and represent our country.”
