World number one Nelly Korda moved closer to gold in the women’s Olympic golf competition, as Aditi Ashok bolstered India’s hopes of an unlikely place on the podium after the third round in the Kasumigaseki Country Club Friday.

Leading overnight by four strokes, American Korda scored a 69 under two to lead Ashok by three (68) out of a total of 198 under 15.

After setting the course ablaze with a 62 on Thursday, Korda had to fight a back nine, but rushed well to score 10 straight runs en route to the clubhouse to stay clear of the field.

“I was sprinkling it all over the place,” Korda said. “I had a few tough putts, but I got through all the pars and fought really hard to stay in the race or in the lead.

“If I had been careless and didn’t fight like I did, I certainly could have shot above par on the last nine, at least. But I never give up. “

Former world No.1 Lydia Ko burst into the medal race, the New Zealander shot a 66 to finish in the bronze position under 10, with Australia’s Hannah Green (67), Dane Emily Kristine Pedersen (70) and local hope Mone Inami (68).

Rio champion Park Inbee’s hopes of defending her title practically ended in a 71, leaving her 12 shots adrift.

Great Britain’s Jodie Ewart Shadoff (70) is co-34th with one down, but Mel Reid is 11th more after a five-over of 76.

Korda and world No.200 Ashok might already have their medals sewn up depending on the weather.
