Tokyo metropolitan areas expand virus advisory on increase in cases

Prefectures surrounding Tokyo have expanded a coronavirus advisory limiting restaurant openings, alcohol sales and the number of spectators amid rising infections.

Kanagawa’s local government declared its own state of emergency on Friday and asked restaurants to shorten their operations and refrain from offering alcohol, measures that will take effect from July 22. Local authorities in Saitama and Chiba have expanded the areas covered by the existing virus advisory.

The movements come less than a week before the start of the Tokyo Olympics on July 23. With Japan lagging behind other developed countries in his vaccination campaign, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga saw his approval ratings plummet in opinion polls.
