Tokyo reported 736 daily cases of the novel coronavirus on Saturday, the second-highest daily increase, bringing the monthly tally, already above the record cases recorded last month, to 9,951.

Saturday’s daily figure is the largest since the record high of 822 was confirmed on Thursday. So far, the total number of cases in December has exceeded 9,857 cases for the entire month of November, with a cumulative figure of more than 50,000.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government raised its alert on Thursday over pressure on the medical system at the highest of four levels. This is the first time that the most severe level has been reached since the virus epidemic.
