Tom Brady admitted he “didn’t think so” when he threw the Vince Lombardi Trophy over a river during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super Bowl celebrations.
Brady and his teammates were on a parade of boats down the Hillsborough River in Tampa to celebrate their victory over the Kansas City Chiefs when he threw the trophy at tight end Cameron Brate.
The trophy is an iconic piece of silverware and, addressed to James Corden on The late showBrady admitted the consequences could have been severe had he missed his shot.
“First of all, I wasn’t thinking about that time,” he said. “It wasn’t a thought. It was, ‘It sounds really fun to do.
“Not to mention that when you get your hands on one of these trophies, there are a lot of really sharp edges on the bottom.
Brady only became the second quarterback – after Peyton Manning – to win the Super Bowls with two different teams
“I found out later if it was an incomplete pass that would have gone down to 80 feet [in the river]. I am so happy that Cam [caught it]. “
Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl victory saw Brady win a record-breaking seventh ring, with his previous six as the New England Patriot.
The 43-year-old was understandably eager to celebrate his achievement and was pictured during the parade being helped off a boat.
When asked if his legs were unstable from the water or the alcohol, Brady replied, “A bit of both. It was definitely a party time.
“I’m happy to be down at that point, absolutely. I’m happy to be surrounded by my fellow quarterback. [Ryan Griffin] In the right place at the right time.
“Who could have a better friend than that? To make sure I was so comfortable getting off the boat like that.”
