Tong-Raan Kugbilsong Nalebegtang, the supreme leader of the traditional area of Talensi defeated four candidates to retain his seat as the representative of the Upper East region on the State Council.
The former Talensi constituency MP polled 19 out of 30 votes to beat Pe Ditundini Adiali Thomas-More, the supreme leader of the traditional Chiana region and current speaker of the House of Chiefs of the Upper East region who had six voices.
Dr Akamboe Ayirebasia, a retired civil servant managed to garner five votes while Mr. Akurugu Eric Aligiyelah, a teacher and Mr. Yaw Mort, a former regional organizer of the New Patriotic Party and a businessman had no voice.
Mr. William Obeng Adarkwa, the regional director who reported the results, said all 30 delegates voted successfully and no ballots were rejected.
In a victory speech, Tong-Raan expressed his gratitude to the delegates for the confidence placed in him to serve the region again and called for collective efforts to develop the region.
He said the people of the region, especially the leaders, must recognize that the region is poor and that it would take teamwork to develop it gradually and ensure a better future for the younger generation.
“The habit of slaughtering one must stop, we must see our region as one of the most disadvantaged regions in the country and come together to fight for the growth of the region. Let us work jealously for the progress of the region so that our children do not suffer and do not blame us, ”he said.
The Supreme Leader pledged to apply an open door policy and noted that although he has helped many young people in the region find jobs, especially in the security sector, and has played a key role in the start of construction of the Pwalugu multipurpose dam, he would continue working to bring the dam to fruition.
He further assured that he would work with the relevant stakeholders to implement more development projects to improve the living conditions of the people of the region.
