The 28th annual Gotham Awards took place last night, offering our first glimpse of a major awards show as we headed for the upcoming Academy Awards. The Gotham Awards focus on independent films, but many previous winners have won a gold medal at the Oscars (get out and Call me by your name big winners from last year).
This year, the western drama of Chloé Zhao The horseman won the Best Feature Award in a very competitive category, and Toni Collette and Ethan Hawke won the main categories of actors for their outstanding work Hereditary and First reformed, respectively. Eigth year also won big trophies for the actress Elsie Fisher and director Bo Burnham. Read the full list of winners below.
The Gotham Awards are the first major step in the long and winding road to the Academy Awards. In recent years, they have become a good gauge for which the films could eventually win Oscars. Gotham winners like Moonlight, Spotlight, and Birdman all then won the best film.

Will this new generation of winners give even more acceptance speeches as the rewards season continues? I would not be in the least surprised to see Will not you be my neighbor? continue to roll but while The horseman could be nominated for the best movie at the Oscars, let's face it: it's a long shot to win there.
Personally, I am delighted to see Toni Collette and Ethan Hawke being rewarded for two of this year's greatest acting performances, and I would love to see them perform on stage at Dolby Theater in February. Winning a Gotham Award may well be the driving force they need to get through the awards season and reach the biggest step of the year.
