"Hadestown," the terrifying musical comedy about the underworld, spent an idyllic night at the Tony Awards, winning eight trophies on Sunday, including the best new musical and offering a rare victory to a musical director.

"The Ferryman" by playwright Jez Butterworth was crowned best play. In the four categories of lead and actress, Bryan Cranston won his supporting role, Tony, but theater veterans Elaine May, Santino Fontana and Stephanie J. Block each won their first victory.

The crowd at Radio City Music Hall exploded when Ali Stroker wrote the story as the first wheelchair actor to win a Tony. Stroker, paralyzed from the bust as a result of a car accident while she was 2, was rewarded for her actresses in a musical for her work in the dark revival of Oklahoma!

"This award is for every child who looks tonight with a disability, limitation or challenge, who is waiting to be represented in this arena," she said. "You are."
