Too much stretching could do more harm than good – The Chosun Ilbo (English Edition): The Korea Day News

Stretching relieves muscle tension and minimizes the risk of injury, but excessive stretching can weaken joints, ligaments and tendons, causing more pain and disease on the road.

Excessive stretching causes loosening of ligaments and bone instability. Choi Yoo-wang, an orthopedic surgeon, said: "Infections can occur on the ligaments, or the cartilage of the joints can be damaged, resulting in the early onset of degenerative arthritis."

Chronic pain can occur if the injury does not heal properly.

Hong Jung-gi of Cha University sports medicine school said: "If you stretch the ligaments badly, the surrounding muscles contract in order to stabilize the joint. The muscle tension then adds pressure on the nerves and can cause pain. "

"You have to stretch gently and not force it," added Choi. A tight feeling on the joints is adequate and there is no point stretching it as long as it does not hurt.
