Lionel Messi was declared top scorer in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 2011/12, ending four goals by Robert Lewandowski.

Without any player from Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool to less than seven of the 12 points scored by Messi before the final, the Barcelona striker was almost guaranteed to find himself alone in the top of the table for the fifth time. And that proved, even though Mohamed Salah joined the list of players on five goals.

Messi had already experienced a four-season series between 2008/09 and 2011/12, the last time the trophy went to England. Messi also shared first place in 2014/15 with Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo, who, by the way, were alone each season since 2012/13.
It has been 12 years since neither Messi nor Ronaldo had at least a share of the honor of the top scorer, when Kaká led the way in the 2006/07 AC Milan triumph.
