Tor project developers now accept donations in 9 different crypto currencies

The developers of Tor Project, Inc., a Mbadachusetts-based non-profit entity focused on research and educational initiatives related to "maintaining software" for the Tor anonymity network, would have decided to start accepting directly donations in cryptocurrency.

9 different currencies accepted

Those looking to contribute to the ongoing development of the privacy-focused Tor Network can now donate in 9 different crypto-currencies. As indicated on Tor's official website, users can make payments to finance their various projects in the following crypto: Augur (REP), Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Dash (DASH), Ether (ETH) , Litecoin (LTC)), Monero (XMR), Stellar Lumines (XLM) and Zcash (ZEC).

The portfolio addresses for each of the cryptos mentioned above were provided by Tor's management team. Although Tor's project managers only listed these crypto-currencies, they asked users to send an email to [email protected] in case anyone would like to donate in an unsupported cryptocurrency on his website.

Other more traditional payment options accepted by Tor include checks or money orders, bank transfers based in the EU, Amazon payments and donations of company shares held by users. As explained on the Tor project website, those who plan to donate have the option of filling out a form with their basic credentials. This includes providing an email address so that donors can be recognized for their contributions. However, this is not mandatory.

Micropayments accepted in bitcoins

In addition, micropayments in BTC are currently not supported "due to the current state of the Bitcoin market," notes the direction of Tor. However, users can make smaller transfers of $ 5 or less in Bitcoin Cash.

Once the funds have been sent to the portfolio addresses shown on the official Tor project website, the digital currency is converted and processed later via the Kraken US encryption system.

Sarah Stevenson, Tor Project Fundraising Director, told CoinDesk:

[Tor’s donors had] asked direct portfolio addresses "and they had also asked Tor project developers to accept other major cryptocurrency, in addition to BTC.

"More and more" donors want to donate crypto

Commenting on the growing number of user requests regarding additional donations in more cryptos, Stevenson said:

We decided to accept cryptocurrency because more and more donors have asked for this option. The Tor project and the cryptocurrency communities place great importance on confidentiality, which makes sense.

Explaining why his relatively small Tor project team began accepting other cryptos, Stevenson said:

We focused on two things: the return on investment in time and effort and the pieces that donors specifically requested. We are currently limiting the number of separate portfolios we need to monitor and manage and only accept currencies that can be converted to fiat via Kraken.
