A vacationer from the apartment above Madeleine McCann claims to have seen a "ranger" open the door hours before disappearing.
The suspicious sight came from the tourist Carole Tranmer, who was visiting her aunt at the seaside resort of Praia da Luz in Portugal.
As part of a new Netflix documentary on Madeleine, entitled The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann, Carole's observations are told through investigator and author Anthony Summers.
He said, "Carole was looking out the window.
"She said:" Looking down from the McCann apartment, I saw someone coming out of the ground floor apartment by closing the door very much. gently and carefully.
"It even seemed very strange to me.
"He looked on one side and the other, closed the door and walked very quickly underneath."
"It's the afternoon of the day Madeleine is going to disappear.
"What seemed strange to her," she said, was "the way the man had closed the little door there. "
Anthony goes on to describe how Carole's attention was captured by the stealthy way in which the man moved, "as he did not want anyone to know that she was coming or going."
The new eight-part documentary describes the events that led to Maddie's disappearance, the night of her disappearance, and the many years of searching for her.
Madeleine was on vacation with her parents, siblings and a wider group of friends of Kate and Gerry when she disappeared on May 3, 2007.
Her parents were dining in a tapas bar just steps from the apartment where she had been left sleeping with her two younger twin brothers and sisters.
According to the Netflix show, Kate and Gerry took turns monitoring the kids all night long.
Around 10 pm, Kate went to the apartment where she found Maddie's bed empty.
The documentary examines various police theories that were investigated in the months that followed, including that her own parents were involved.
One of the theories was that McCann had accidentally killed Maddie by giving him too much Calpol.
Anthony Summers told the producers of the series: "By the end of the summer, this meant that they [the children] perhaps excessive sedation by administering a medication.
Its co-author, Robbyn Swan, said: "The case of the Portuguese cops against the McCanns was as follows: she died accidentally on May 3, the alleged controls on the children had been made, body … and her body was then transported to the rental car they had rented a few weeks later. "
All claims that the McCanns were involved were completely discredited.
