Toyota and Suzuki have announced a major new collaboration involving Toyota's production of Suzuki-brand hybrid vehicles based on the RAV4 and Corolla domains for the European market.

The two Japanese companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a partnership in 2007, and have now agreed on "concrete details" of the agreement. The two companies said the deal would bring together "Toyota's strength in electrification technologies and Suzuki's strength in compact vehicle technologies."

The agreement is also designed to help both companies "grow into new areas" and will include collaboration in production and electrified vehicles. Toyota and Suzuki say they "will continue to compete fairly and freely."

Both companies gave details of a number of specific projects in which they will collaborate, divided into three parts.

Toyota will supply Suzuki with its hybrid propulsion system worldwide and will supply Suzuki with two new RAV4 and Corolla powered vehicles for the European market. Both cars will be produced by OEM supply, which means that Toyota will manufacture them for Suzuki.

Toyota will also adopt the new compact vehicle engines recently developed by Suzuki on the European market. These engines will be manufactured at Toyota's facilities in Poland.

Both companies will work on the development of hybrid vehicles for the Indian market. Suzuki will also supply Toyota with two compact vehicles based on the Ciaz and Ertiga brands for the Indian market and four vehicles on the African market. In addition, Toyota and Suzuki have agreed to collaborate on the development of a C-segment SUV for India, with Toyota supporting production of the Suzuki Vitara Brezza for this market.
