Toyota will invest 13 billion dollars in the United States over the next five years, the company announced Thursday, increasing its investment promise by 30%.

This funding will increase the production of hybrid versions of the RAV4 and Lexus ES, with production starting in May at the Toyota manufacturing plant in Kentucky.

Over the next five years, Toyota announced an increase in production capacity at existing manufacturing facilities in Huntsville, Alabama. Buffalo, West Virginia; Troy, Missouri; and Jackson, Tennessee, creating nearly 600 new jobs, Toyota said.

The announcement comes a little over a month after Toyota and Panasonic announced the creation of a joint venture for the production of electric car batteries, an initiative that is expected to employ 3,500 US workers by 2020.

President Donald Trump, a long-time champion of burgeoning US auto construction, praised Toyota's announcement Thursday on Twitter, attributing this decision to the new US-Mexico-Canada deal.

Toyota's decision to increase hybrid car manufacturing is on an upward trend: as emissions restrictions tighten in Europe and human-induced climate change consolidates, hybrid cars stand out.

BMW announced that it would increase sales of hybrid cars three years ago. Volvo has promised that all new vehicles after 2019 will be electric or hybrid, and earlier this week, Volkswagen announced it has manufactured 22 million electric cars over the next decade.
