The original Toyota RAV4 crossover SUV arrived in the US showrooms in 1996. It was a world powered by beeps, fax machines and dial-up modems. American Online was all the rage and the best-selling car in the US was the Ford Taurus.

In 23 years, the world has changed dramatically. Smartphones, social media and WiFi dominate everyday communications. AOL is no more than a shell, and the same can be said of the Ford Taurus heading back to the cutting block.

Last year, Toyota sold more than 427,000 RAV4s, making it the fourth-best-selling vehicle in the United States, behind only the Ford F-Series, the Chevrolet Silverado and the RAM 1500.

The RAV4 is also the number one seller in the compact SUV segment, which accounted for about one in every five vehicles sold in the US last year and is growing at 11.9%, according to data compiled by Kelley Blue Book.

On the market, the RAV4 is a direct competitor to the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Mazda CX-5, Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Escape.

Business Insider recently had the chance to spend a week with a limited edition Toyota RAV4 2019 prototype.

The 2019 base Toyota RAV4 LE 2019 starts at $ 25,500, while the XLE, XLE Premium and Adventure clbad models are priced at $ 27,300, $ 29,500 and $ 32,900. The limited upscale trim starts at $ 33,500.

The hybrid variants of the RAV4 start at $ 27,700 for the LE and go up to the Limited version, starting at $ 35,700.

All-wheel drive is available as an option at $ 1,400 on all versions, except for the Adventure and Hybrid variants, in which it comes standard.
