Calanog kept in touch with the couple via SMS while they were going to a clinic and then returning to their hotel after receiving, according to Michelle's texts, copious amounts of liquids and electrolyte packets.

But on May 25, he learned that his 35-year-old daughter was dead.

Two days later, his 38-year-old son-in-law, who had texted his stepfather about receiving intravenous infusions at the hospital and possibly transported to Australia for surgery, also succumbed to the mysterious disease.

The cause of the deaths, occurred just days after the escape to the island of the adventurous couple, remained unknown.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services of Fiji said in a press release yesterday that the flu had been ruled out and that "at this point, we do not think that there is a risk to the public".

An investigation is underway and a small number of staff and health workers who have had close contact with the couple have been monitored but have remained in good condition. The ministry also worked with the Fiji Police Forensic Department, the World Health Organization, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the US Embbady to find the cause of death.
