The first official trailer of Scary stories to tell in the dark is here and it's straight out of a nightmare. The film is based on the 1981 series of horror anthems of the same name by Alvin Schwartz, a staple of children's libraries and childhood nightmares.
Guillermo del Toro took over the project in 2014 as a screenwriter and director, but entrusted André Øvredal (The autopsy of Jane Doe). Previously, short teasers indicated which stories from the anthology would be included in the film. This first trailer, however, shows more of the overall plot, which revolves around a strange city called Mill Valley and Sarah, a girl with horrific secrets that she tells in a newspaper.
The American Library Association views the anthology of the horror of children as the most controversial book of the 90s. The parents wanted it, but also the frightening and often disturbing illustrations by Stephen Gammell.
Indeed, the aesthetics of Scary Stories books has been one of the most iconic features of the series. The special edition of the 30th anniversary of the books contained new illustrations (from A series of unfortunate events artist Brett Helquist), who encouraged purists to take their fury for the Internet. The macabre and macabre aura of the series is clearly on the nostalgic pedestal.
Scary stories to tell in the dark is released on August 9th.
