Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies – happy with that? How successful was Michael Edwards on the transfer deadline day?
A combined total of around £ 2.6million in loan and transfer fees for the pair is just a ridiculously good deal on the club’s part, especially so close to the deadline and with everyone more than aware of the desperate need for defensive reinforcements.
Rival fans will no doubt be quick to point out Schalke’s dismal position in the Bundesliga, not to mention the fact that we have bought a league defender, but I have no doubt that these are signings that will have been carefully vetted.
Given the pandemic and the previous reluctance of the Liverpool hierarchy to sanction any business in the winter window, I think Michael Edwards has done a remarkable job in the time available – is there something the director sportsman can not succeed?
Normally it’s not Liverpool that scramble and leave things late – why do you think they’ve done it this month?
In typical Liverpool fashion, we’ve been absolutely saved from injury this season in one particular position, which seems to have had a ripple effect for the rest of the squad, after Jurgen Klopp was forced to drag Fabinho (and, intermittently, Jordan Henderson) in the bottom four.
And even before Joel Matip was sent off for the rest of the season, I think it was clear to most of us that not bringing in a new center-back (at the absolute minimum) before the closing the window would put our Champions League Qualifying chances in serious jeopardy.
A big week has just passed in the Premier League with victories over Tottenham and West Ham. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino seem to be back in shape …
When Roberto Firmino plays well, Liverpool end up playing well as a whole, as has been shown to devastatingly against Tottenham.
I still think a lot of the struggles in our front line can be linked to absentees in defense, but there is no doubt how vital the Brazilian is in his time, nor how much a return to form for the n ° 9 will be important to our hopes of retaining the title.

It’s weird to say that the Premier League’s top scorer is out of form, but I’m sure we were all happy to forget Mohamed Salah’s six scoreless games in the league after that superb outing against West Ham.
We hailed that two-pass counter for doubling the lead against David Moyes’ men as vintage Liverpool under Klopp, and rightly so, but I personally can’t stop thinking about the Egyptian’s first effort. in traffic to open the score.
Can Liverpool still win the league title and has there been talk of a largely exaggerated decline?
This Liverpool side are not getting the credit they deserve given the number of injuries they’ve suffered, and no less for key players. Being four points behind the league leaders without our starting center-back duo is no easy feat.

I think things have been a bit of a stretch – a full strength Liverpool side would be top of the table right now.
It’s going to be a big week ahead with Brighton on Wednesday and then Man City on the weekend. What will the table look like on Sunday night?
Massive weekend for us. Pep Guardiola’s men have been stealing lately and the Cityzens are expected to extend their league-top lead against Burnley by midweek.
A win against Brighton would put us in a good position ahead of our rivals’ visit to Anfield, however, and the guys are always pushing things up against quality opposition.

If I had to make a prediction I think Liverpool will close the gap with a big performance on our own ground on Sunday – we will certainly need that to hope to retain the title.
Any other business?
The big question that comes to my mind has to be what Jurgen Klopp intends to do with his brand new center-back options.
Presumably the idea is to start Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak together in the near future, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw one of the two paired up with Fabinho for the decisive clash with City.
That being said, we’ve been surprised by defensive signings before, so who knows!
Bringing back two central halfs will surely encourage Klopp to push the Brazilian back to midfield where his quality has been sorely missed.
At the very least, that should mean that Henderson’s alternate days at the back are now officially over.
