65% of all vehicles involved in all traffic accidents were commercial vehicles
The Public Security Bureau (BPS) has identified transportation-related accidents as one of the leading causes of casualties in the country.
According to the BPS, 41% of deaths recorded in the country, among ten indicators, from January to June 2019, were caused by transport.
"Transportation remains the leading cause of death among the ten indicators of public safety and monitored crime. It accounts for more than 41% of deaths reported from January to June 2019, "BPS said in its report.
The report broadly categorized public safety events clbadified as crimes, violent crimes, fires and incidents related to the private / labor sector, transportation incidents, civil unrest, loss of police lives, police brutality, police arrests, disasters natural and general incidents.
BPS said in its report that 65% of all vehicles involved in all road accidents were commercial vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles).
"HGVs and large vehicles (LUVs) accounted for 37% of all vehicles involved in various road accidents. The contribution of a one-time tax system to improving safety on our roads can not be overstated. The government has not shown any concrete commitment to reducing the number of cars on the roads, with the Spot Fine system continuing to be discussed over the past decade. "
The BPS acknowledged recent efforts by Citi TV / FM in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service's Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to reduce the lack of discipline on the roads, but urged MTTD traffic laws across Ghana to make significant gains in reducing road accidents. "
Government Raises 258,000 GHc from Citi TV's "Against Indiscipline" Campaign
The campaign "The war against indiscipline" was launched by Citi TV in May 2019 and has received support from the public and civil society to date.
The campaign aims to prevent the growing number of casualties caused by the carnage of the road due to carelessness and general disregard for the Highway Code.
The campaign saw the state benefit from GHG 258,000 in fines.
Nearly 500 drivers have been arrested for breaking the highway code on various roads in Accra.

The Ghana Public Safety and Crime Report, also known as BPS WATCH, is an initiative of the Public Security Bureau to provide information to the general public, policymakers and law enforcement.
