LONDON (Reuters) – Zari Tadayon, who flew to Britain from Dubai on Monday, will have to spend her 69th birthday alone in a Radisson Blu hotel room in COVID-19 quarantine.
Tadayon, who is originally from Greece but has pre-settled status and his family in Britain, flew to Dubai on January 22 to sort out some legal issues before Britain introduced its hotel quarantine policy for some countries including United Arab Emirates.
Those wishing to return to Britain from a list of high-risk countries must pay 1,750 pounds ($ 2,400) for a 10-day hotel quarantine.
“It’s disappointing – it’s quite disappointing,” Tadayon told Reuters from the Radisson Blu at Heathrow. “I don’t know if I’m allowed out – no one explained anything to me.”
She will celebrate her birthday on Tuesday alone in her room.
“I can’t even see my kids on my birthday,” Tadayon said.
“The cost is quite high – I was not prepared for this forced expense. I could have given it to my kids or celebrated my birthday with my family for half that amount or even a quarter of that amount.
Tadayon said she had to wait several hours for entering the country due to start-up issues with the quarantine policy.
“Immigration officials weren’t very sure what to do – we just waited and waited for a hotel,” she says.
She spoke to Reuters while eating a spinach salad and roast chicken with potatoes. She said that for medical reasons she would have preferred to isolate herself at home.
“I was in Dubai for three weeks – I had to deal with some legal issues which were very important. I was not there for a beach vacation.
When asked what she would do for 10 days, she replied, “I don’t know. I don’t have any books with me because I wasn’t prepared. Maybe watch TV and chat with your friends and family online. What else can you do? “
