Forecasters have downgraded tropical storm Barry into a tropical depression, but Barry remains a major contributor to rain and tornado as he heads north.

Parts of Louisiana could still see up to 38 inches of rain with lesser amounts in parts of Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi and Tennessee.

"These precipitations should lead to dangerous, life-threatening floods," warn forecasters who fear the storm is no longer a threat.

Barry made landfall on Saturday in Category 1 hurricane, sparing New Orleans a direct hit, but cutting off the current and causing floods in other parts of the state.

No serious injury or major damage has been reported. But some residents in Louisiana said the soil was already saturated before Barry collapsed, raising fears that tall trees would hit homes and cars.

US President Donald Trump said the state of emergency in Louisiana before the storm, allowing federal funds to help local authorities cope with any storm needed.

Barry was the first storm of the Atlantic hurricane season 2019, which began on June 1 and continues until November 30.
